E.M. Washington (Attributed) "The Real Jazz" Woodcut Print

The prints listed in Lots 533 thru 552 are part of an alleged "discovery" of woodblock prints attributed to Earl M. Washington, an African-American wood-engraver, which turned out to be a hoax orchestrated by his supposed great-grandson of the same name. The prints, initially celebrated for their historical significance, were actually "original" copies made by the descendant who falsely claimed they were from the elder Washington's collection. Despite the deception, these prints remain notable for their depiction of African-American subjects and the intrigue of the entire story itself. Some of the pieces are actual woodcuts and some are facsimile prints.
